Isn't it time we had a FORTRAN 4 chip?

I'm holding out for a hardware brainfuck implementation.

what the fuck? 24 core, 18Gips stackable forth machines? On a pen drive? want want want.

And fast enough to implement a software fm radio.

Just received the datasheet. Wow. Just - Wow. I can see an awful lot of uses for one of these, or potentially for a load of 'em hooked together. The cores themselves are asynchronous, they will run as fast as the silicon will let them go, but go into deep sleep when they are waiting for input.

2 ADC/DAC pairs, 5 GPIOs, 3 synchronous serial connections, 3 asynchronous serial connetions, 2 parallel ports that can be configured to access memory), and an SPI port. What's not to like?

I've never looked at Forth at all, but this sounds fascinating

Very interesting.

Software radio's are very appealing, surely it could decode other radio based frequences too?

There would probably be a market for a "all wireless stuff" card/stick if someone could pull it off.

i remember reading someone had squeezed a forth implementation into 40 bytes

there is packet forth, a generative graphics thing, most web pages on it seem to be slow, but it's included on the pure:dyne live cd

So... a small amount of ram, but lots of cycles and cores and a 128x128 output? Who's going to write a raytracer for it? :D

40 bytes? How?? The lookup table for the built-in primitive dictionary is bigger than that:

EXIT LIT EXECUTE BRANCH 0BRANCH (LOOP) (DO) U* U/ AND OR XOR LEAVE R> >R R 0= 0< + D+ MINUS DMINUS OVER DROP SWAP DUP @ C@ ! C! (DOES)

Admittedly it's possible to write a FORTH engine supporting only 13 primitives, but even then your dictionary is going to be a minimum of 13 bytes plus a null entry. That leaves 26 bytes for the rest of the engine!

I'd love to see this - can you remember where you saw it?

I mentioned this to my brother yeaterday. His first response was "sounds like the sort of thing you could use to implement your own phased array radar".

No need for a transmitter - just track aircraft using reflections of emissions from your local cell phone towers.

The video interface used 7 of the cores, and you'd need to use another 3 for the interface to memory for getting data in, that only leaves 14 cores for processing. It would be, as they say, "tight".

Still, an interesting project. I'm waiting on feedback on the simulator myself.

Now that's cool.. always wondered if Chuck Moore was still in the Forth business. Going to have to do some reading on this, ta :)
